Whooper swan

Anseriformes | Anatidae | Ducks, geese, swans

A huge swan with a long, wedge-shaped head and bill extensively marked with yellow, a rather straight, slim neck and a short, square tail.

Compared with Mute Swans, Whoopers are much wilder, far less approachable, and not very familiar to most people. Their range is much more restricted, but in many traditional wintering sites they mix with Mutes and Bewick’s Swans.

A regular winter visitor and passage migrant through the Basin.
