Spoonbill

Pelecaniformes | Threskiornithidae | Ibises, spoonbills

A big, heron-like bird of shallow water and ready marshes, with a unique flattened bill tip. It is much sturdier and thicker-legged than the white egrets.

Although white like an egret, the Spoonbill is a quite different bird, identifiable at great range. Its thick legs, solid build and almost human walk (and its habit of feeding in small, tight groups) create a much more stable and sedate impression, although it can become quite agitated and move fast when chasing prey.

A rare summer visitor, seen at Lurgies and Maryton Ditch.
