Sparrow, tree

Passeriformes | Passerine | Sparrows, snowfinches and allies

Both sexes much like the male House Sparrow, but slightly smaller, rounder, often with a cocked tail. Face pattern and brown cap are the best clues.

Tree Sparrows seem to have always undergone marked fluctuations in numbers and distribution, but recent declines in western Europe, including Britain and Ireland, seem especially severe. In some areas they have become rarities where once they were frequent.

Common resident, breeds at the Basin. Easy to see from the Visitor Centre.
