Snipe

Charadriiformes | Scolopacidae | Sandpipers, snipes, phalaropes

A marshland wader that flies up almost underfoot with a loud rasping call; striped back and dark wings distinctive but hard to see in sudden, fast zigzag take-off.

Favouring overgrown mud and shallow water, the Snipe is hard to see when on the ground. It flies away high and fast if disturbed, sometimes in small groups or ‘wisps’. Unlike most waders it does not normally associate with other species.

A common winter visitor and passage migrant. Breeds at the Basin, but not easy to spot.
