Sandpiper, common

Charadriiformes | Scolopacidae | Sandpipers, snipes, phalaropes

An olive-brown and bright white wader with short, dull legs and a medium length, straight bill; flight and feeding action distinctive.

This wader is easily identified by the constant up-and-down, rhythmic swing of its rear body and bobbing head. In flight it is equally distinctive, keeping low and using a stiff, bow-winged, flickering action.

A common passage migrant, numbers peak July-August.
