Sand martin

Passeriformes | Hirundinidae | Swallows and martins

This is a small, fluttery martin with a sharply forked tail, and broad-based wings, with narrower tips angled back. Its white underside with a brown breast band is distinctive.

Of all the swallows and martins, this is the smallest and weakest in flight, typically feeding low over water with frequent tight twists and turns. Flocks often rise higher, especially if a predator such as a hobby is nearby.

We get multiple breeding pairs of Sand Martins in our specially built Sand Martin wall every year. They also nest in the sand banks at the Bridge of Dun.
