Marsh harrier
Accipitriformes | Accipitridae | Hawks, eagles
The largest, heaviest harrier with the shortest tail. The male is distinctive. The female is usually obvious but neds care at long range or high up, when she may resemble a buzzard.
This bird of prey is usually instantly recognisable as a harrier, despite its size. Marsh Harriers are often associated with marshes, but they travel widely when hunting over adjacent farmland and sometimes turn up in very dry areas while on migration.
