This round-bodied, stump-tailed, long-necked swimming bird is rarely on land and dives frequently. It holds its thin neck upright or withdrawn into its shoulders.

Unmistakeable facial adornments make the Great crested grebe a distinctive bird in spring and summer. The colourful ruffs are absent in winter, when it looks very white-faced and white-breasted, with a slender neck and dagger bill.
