Great black-backed gull

The biggest gull, always thickset and heavy-billed, it is typically pale-headed and contrasted at all times.

The largest of the world’s gulls, the Great black-back is best distinguished by its size with a wingspan of up to 1.7m. It used to be a mainly coastal bird, but is increasingly wintering inland in Britain.

Present at the Basin all year but more common during Winter.
