Red-breasted merganser

Anseriformes | Anatidae | Ducks, geese, swans

A large sawbilled duck: long, elegant, slim-necked, sharp-billed; males boldly pied, females rather blurred and dingy; swims low in the water, diving often.

The fine lines typical of sawbills combine with the Red-breasted Merganser’s rich colour and pattern to create a supremely elegant bird. Unlike many diving ducks it is also lively and active: a fascinating bird to watch.

Present all year. Numbers usually peak in late summer.
