Whimbrel

Charadriiformes | Scolopacidae | Sandpipers, snipes, phalaropes

Very Curlew-like, the Whimbrel is smaller, darker, more stripey-headed, with a slightly shorter bill; in flight it is more compact, quick, and dark-looking.

While Curlews are present in Europe all year round, Whimbrels are welcome visitors in spring, sometimes moving north in flocks of several dozen together. In autumn they make a more leisurely return southwards, their frequent flight calls drawing attention to small parties flying high overhead.

A regular passage migrant of the Basin, usually during May and sometimes in autumn.
